Veteran Directed Care
Your home. Your choices.
Support along the way.
Remaining at home can mean staying close to the people, routines, and community you love. Veteran Directed Care gives eligible veterans more choice in how they receive the support they need.
Through a partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), AgeMaine helps veterans who need a nursing home level of care explore services and supports that allow them to continue living at home.
Care that puts you in charge
Choose your care workers and shape a plan around your needs, with AgeMaine beside you.

We’ll listen to your goals, preferences, and what matters most to you.
2. Build your careplan
You decide who provides your care and how it fits your life.
3. Choose your support
Get the services and support you need to live safely and independently.
How does it work?
Veterans direct their own care by choosing, hiring, training, and managing their care workers. This may include family members, friends, or neighbors. If a veteran needs help managing these responsibilities, an authorized representative can assist.
An AgeMaine team member works alongside the veteran and their support network to develop a care plan and spending plan based on their needs, priorities, and approved budget.
What support may be available?
Depending on individual needs and VA approval, a spending plan may include:
Help with personal care and household tasks
Adult Day Programs
Respite care to give caregivers a break
Assistive technology and equipment
Home accessibility supports, such as ramps
Other approved goods and services that support safety and independence
All purchases and services must be included in the approved spending plan and meet program requirements.
Who can participate?
The program may be an option for veterans who:
Are enrolled in the VA health care system
Meet the VA’s nursing home level of care criteria
Want to direct their own care
Can manage their care workers independently or with help from an authorized representative
The VA determines eligibility and authorizes services based on each veteran’s needs.
