“You Can Give the Gift of Time”: Karen’s Story
For Karen, volunteering with Southern Maine Agency on Aging has become a natural extension of the values that have guided her throughout her life. As both a volunteer and
You might become the familiar face at someone’s door, the voice they look forward to hearing, or the person who helps a confusing decision feel manageable. Volunteering with AgeMaine starts with giving a little of your time. Along the way, you get to know your neighbors, share stories, and build connections that give you something to look forward to, too.
550+ volunteers bring their kindness, experience, and care to our communities across Cumberland and York counties. There’s room for you here, whatever your interests or skills. Tell us what you enjoy and what matters to you. We’ll help you find a way to make a difference that feels right for you.
“Time is precious. I want to make a positive difference with mine. There’s a power in volunteering. You can feel like you’ve used your time on this earth well.”
-Chris, volunteer

Getting to know someone takes time. We ask volunteers to commit to at least six months with AgeMaine, giving relationships a chance to grow and programs dependable support. Schedules vary by role, from weekly commitments to occasional opportunities. We’ll help you find a way to get involved that works for you.
We welcome volunteers who want to give back, learn from others, and support neighbors with different backgrounds and experiences. AgeMaine works to improve quality of life for older adults and the people who care for them, including those who face barriers to finding support.
That includes older New Mainers, LGBTQIA+ older adults, people living in rural communities, people experiencing homelessness, and people with sensory impairments. By bringing curiosity, care, and respect to your volunteer role, you can help more neighbors feel welcome and connected to the services they need.
The time you share matters. Recording your hours helps AgeMaine show the contribution volunteers make and can help our programs receive matching funds through grants.
