Meals on Wheels

Good food delivered to your door.
A familiar face to check in.

AgeMaine’s Meals on Wheels program brings nutritious meals to older adults and others who have difficulty leaving home or preparing meals. Each delivery also brings a brief visit from a volunteer or staff member who checks in and makes sure everything is okay. For families, that regular contact can bring peace of mind.

We deliver in Cumberland and York counties, generally on Tuesdays or Thursdays between 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. You may receive up to five meals at each delivery.

“I signed up for Meals on Wheels for the outside contact as much as I did it for the food. I like talking to my volunteer when he’s here because I don’t get much company. I appreciate it every time he drops in to check on me, even if it’s only for a few minutes.”

Who can receive Meals on Wheels?

What can the program help cover?

  • Respite care: Up to $4,500 in eligible expenses per fiscal year, including in-home care, adult day care, or up to two weeks of overnight care in a facility.
  • Home modifications: Up to $2,000 over a lifetime for modifications that support independent living. Prior approval from the Program Coordinator is required.

Who is eligible?

  • The person receiving care must have a written diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia from a physician.
  • The person receiving care must not receive assistance from another state-subsidized program.
  • The caregiver must be at least 18 years old and live in Maine.

The program is funded by the State of Maine Office of Aging and Disability Services. There is often a waiting list for funding.

About the meals

Meals are prepared by a Maine company in USDA-inspected kitchens and approved by a Maine registered dietitian. They arrive frozen, so you can heat and eat them when it works for you. Entrées generally include a protein, a side, a vegetable, and bread. You can also request one quart of milk per week.

We offer a range of meals for different dietary needs, including low-sodium, vegetarian, gluten-free, puréed, renal-friendly, diabetic-friendly, and dairy-free options. Tell us about any dietary needs when you sign up so we can discuss what’s available.

What does it cost?

There is no income requirement. We suggest a donation of $3.50 per meal to help keep the program going, but any amount is welcome. No one is turned away because they cannot donate.
